Ingredients & Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for protein banana bread. Scroll down to the recipe card for full ingredients list and instructions.
Use ripe bananas. They add a delicious natural sweetness. Two large bananas are sufficient for the 1 ¼ cups.
Three eggs help this bread bind together and rise while baking. I do not recommend a vegan substitute, flax eggs, chia eggs or applesauce. For an eggless option, check out this Vegan Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.
Natural creamy nut butter adds protein and substance. In addition, this flavor is slightly detectable. For Paleo, use almond butter or cashew butter. For nut free, use sunflower butter. If desired, peanut butter works well too.
A little vanilla extract adds a homemade taste.
Coconut sugar is a great Paleo sweetener. It is unrefined and much less processed than white sugar. If necessary, white sugar or brown sugar can be used.
Almond flour is a grain free flour that adds more protein. I have not tried this recipe using any other flour. For a classic version, try this Gluten Free Banana Bread.
Vanilla protein powder adds protein and flavor. Use a good tasting vanilla protein powder. For a chocolate protein recipe, try these Protein Brownies.
Baking soda helps this bread rise.
Any type of chocolate chips can be used. For Paleo, use a refined sugar free dairy free variety. Chopped chocolate and mini chocolate chips work well too.

This looks delicious! I have some hemp protein on the way. Do you think these would taste good with that? LOVE your recipes!
Hi Mary! So glad you love my recipes! I don’t personally eat hemp protein, so I can’t speak to that. Overall, this bread doesn’t taste much like protein powder, as long as the protein powder isn’t super flavorful. Hope this helps!
Just made this and it is delicious! Love that it has so much protein. Thank you for being so creative with your recipes!!
Could you reconstitute powdered peanut butter and use that?
Hi Jen! I would worry about the powdered peanut butter not being thick enough once mixed with water. It might work, but I cannot guarantee results. Please let me know if you try it!
Which brand and type of protein powder do you recommend baking with? Thanks!
I like Nuzest vanilla plant based protein powder for this recipe. I recommend using one that you enjoy the flavor of. The protein powder taste is detectable so choose one that is yummy! For that reason, I do not recommend using one that is a unique or strong flavor.
