Ingredients & Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for oat flour banana bread. Scroll down to the recipe card for full ingredients list and instructions.
Use ripe bananas. They should be brown spotted, but not yet fully blackened. Do not use green bananas. About 3 large bananas is sufficient for this recipe.
Melted coconut oil adds moisture to this bread. If needed, substitute with another neutral flavored oil. Use refined coconut oil for a neutral flavor. Unrefined coconut oil has a slight coconut flavor.
Two eggs help bind the banana bread together. For an eggless option, check out this Vegan Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.
Oat flour is a delicious and readily available flour. For gluten free, be sure that the oat flour is certified gluten free. Oats are naturally gluten free, but oftentimes processed alongside wheat. For this recipe, I recommend buying oat flour instead of making it homemade.
A little baking powder helps leaven the bread.
Granulated sugar adds the sweetness. For these photos, I used coconut sugar for a refined sugar free option. If needed, use white sugar or lightly packed brown sugar.
Lastly, the chocolate chips add the chocolate! Any type of chocolate chips work. Feel free to use dairy free, Vegan, or sugar free if needed. Alternatively, use chopped chocolate, mini chocolate chips or even white chocolate chips. Walnuts are another great add in.
What is Oat Flour?
Oat flour is made from ground up oats. This whole grain flour is slightly hearty and nutty in flavor.
When finely ground up, oat flour resembles regular white flour in texture.
Oat flour is made from only one ingredient: oats. Thus, it can be easily homemade.
To make oat flour, add oats to a blender or food processor. Blend until finely ground. Alternatively, oat flour is readily available in most grocery stores.
Although oats are naturally gluten free, they are oftentimes processed alongside wheat. For this reason, be sure to use a certified gluten free oat flour brand if needed.

I’ve been making this recipe for about a year now and it’s always gone by the end of the day! I always ground my own oat flour and it turns out amazing. We recently found out my son is allergic to eggs and dairy so I replaced the eggs with Bobs Red Mill Egg Replacer and the chocolate chips with allergen friendly chocolate chips. We couldn’t even notice a difference!
I am thrilled to hear that, Ally! Thank you so much. Great to know about the egg replacer!
Easy to put together but I didn’t like the coconut oil taste. Not sure if it’s rancid (if that can happen?) but I should have added cinnamon or more vanilla. It’s very bland. I did put cream cheese chips inside & on top. Will try again with butter
First time making this recipe & my loaf did take about 60 mins to bake @350°.
The flavor/texture is great. I used 1/2 cup avocado oil & a glass baking bread dish. Maybe that’s why it took longer to make? I would make again, but adjusting my time up and possibly a little less oil?
That could be why. I typically use a ceramic baking dish, but glass works well too. Hope it tasted great!
Hi Addison! Do you think it would work if I substitute unsweetened apple sauce for the 1/2 coconut oil? Thanks
Hi Linda! That may work, but I would recommend another oil instead (avocado oil, light flavored olive oil or melted butter). Enjoy!
Can I make this batter into muffins?
Yes! Use the paper muffin liners or generously spray the muffin pan with nonstick spray. I would try them for 12 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Enjoy!
This bread is AWESOME and comes together so easy! It did take about 60 mins to cook. I live at altitude so perhaps related? I also subbed butter for coconut oil. Will be making again!
So glad to hear that, Danielle! I don’t bake at altitude, so that may have had something to do with it. Either way, I am so glad you love it!
