Both unsalted and salted butter work, but I prefer unsalted. If you are dairy free, use dairy free butter. Earth Balance tastes delicious.
Gluten free flour helps thicken the gravy. Tapioca flour is the only other replacement I recommend.
Use any type of broth. Even vegetable broth works well. Alternatively, feel free to use the pan drippings from roasted chicken, pulled pork, or pot roast. Feel free to use a combination of broth and pan drippings.
Sea salt, pepper, and garlic powder add a nice balance of flavor.
Add in coconut aminos for a deeper flavor. This ingredient is optional.
Lastly, garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
Taste & Texture
This gluten free gravy is rich, hearty, and savory. The overall flavor depends on the broth flavor.
This gravy can be chunky and thick or velvety smooth. Continue cooking the gravy to make it thicker. Remove it from the heat earlier for a smooth sauce.
How to Make
Step 1
First, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the flour. Use a whisk to continuously mix until it starts to turn golden, about 3 minutes.
Step 2
Then, pour in the broth (or pan drippings). Allow this mixture to come to a low boil. Lightly boil for 1 minute, or until gravy has reached desired thickness. Whisk constantly to prevent burning.
Step 3
Remove from heat. Stir in the seasonings and coconut aminos.
Step 4
Finally, pour into a gravy boat and serve. Add fresh thyme if desired.
Expert Tips for Success
Here are the tips for making the best gluten free gravy ever!
Tapioca flour or arrowroot powder are great gluten free gravy thickeners.
Prevent lumps by whisking constantly. In addition, this prevents burning.
For a deeper flavor, use pan drippings from roasted chicken, pot roast, or roast beef.
What are Pan Drippings?
Pan drippings are the browned juices and fat left in the roasting pan after the meat has been cooked.
They are full of flavor and can be used to make a delicious gravy.
Pan drippings can be used to make gravy for any type of meat, including chicken, turkey, beef, pork, and lamb.
You can also add other ingredients to your gravy to enhance the flavor, such as herbs, spices, wine, or cream.
If you want a smoother gravy, you can strain it through a fine-mesh sieve before serving.
If you don’t have enough pan drippings, you can add a little bit of water or broth to the pan to deglaze it. This will help to loosen up any browned bits and create more flavor.
Flavor Variations & Add-Ins
Here are some flavor variations for your gluten free gravy.
Infuse with rosemary, thyme, or sage for added depth.
Minced garlic adds a classic garlicky flavor.
Sautéed finely chopped mushrooms add richness and depth.
