Ingredients & Substitutions
Use your favorite brand of gummy bears. Softer gummy bears are best. These photos have Whole Foods 365 gummy bears, but use your favorite. Gummy works can also be used if desired. See below for allergy friendly options.
Melted chocolate chips provide the chocolate coating. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate and semi sweet chocolate can be used. As long as the chocolate chips melt easily, any variety will work. White chocolate sometimes does not melt quite as well, but could provide another option.
A little bit of coconut oil smooths out the chocolate. In addition, the coconut oil helps the chocolate coating stay chilled. Coconut oil is firm when cold, so it keeps the coating firm when chilled. Refined coconut oil has no flavor whereas unrefined coconut oil has a slight coconut flavor.
What Are Gummy Bears?
Gummy bears are fruit flavored soft candies. They are made in many different flavors, colors, and shapes. These small candies are chewy, sticky, and sweet.
They are commonly made with gelatin. Gummy bears originated in Germany and were first commonly known in the 1920s. Haribo began making their signature gummy bears in 1920.
Gluten Free Gummy Bears
Many gummy bears are made with ingredients containing wheat. Oftentimes, glucose syrup is used which traces back to wheat. Unfortunately, this is not safe for those who are Celiac and gluten free.
Thankfully there are several brands that make gluten free bears. As always, double check ingredient labels to be sure they are gluten free. If they are not certified gluten free, there is a chance of cross contamination.
Here are some brands that make gluten free gummy bears.
Scrummy Gummy (also sugar free, Keto and low carb)
Vegan Gummy Bears
Almost all gummy bears are made with gelatin, which helps them stay compact. Gelatin is derived from animals, so many gummy bears are not suitable for Vegans.
