For best results, use fresh halibut. Halibut is sold at most grocery stores and fish markets. If using frozen, thaw completely.
Melted butter adds the best buttery flavor. Butter and fish pair so well together. Ghee is another great option.
In addition to the butter, minced garlic adds a great flavor. Freshly minced garlic is best, but garlic powder can be used if needed.
Paprika adds a little spice and heat. Feel free to omit entirely for a more mild flavor. Overall, this fish is not spicy at all. The paprika just adds a subtle pop of flavor.
Sea salt and pepper also add a little flavor without being overpowering. Feel free to adjust amounts to suit your taste.
Sliced lemon adds brightness, freshness and slight tartness to the fish.

What is Halibut?
Halibut is a flat fish that can grow upwards of 9 feet long! It is actually the largest flat fish in the ocean. Both farm raised and wild caught, this healthy fish is brown on top with a white belly.
This fish is mild and slightly sweet. Its taste is most similar to tilapia. Due to its light flavor, pair halibut with more intense flavors. For this reason, this recipe includes garlic, paprika and lemon.
The name halibut means “holy flat fish”. It was very common in Catholic holy days.

How to Make
Step 1
First, preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Place halibut in oven safe dish.
Step 3
In a small bowl, combine melted butter, minced garlic, paprika, sea salt and black pepper. Pour this mixture over halibut.
Step 4
Bake for 12 to 13 minutes or until fish is opaque and no longer transparent.
Step 5
Finally, remove from oven. Garnish with sliced lemon and chopped parsley if desired.

Delicious recipe! Easy and quick to make. One quick request, please don’t compare halibut to tilapia. Halibut is infinitely more healthy, is not farmed and the taste profile is closer to soul or flounder.

Great recipe, this is the top way to cook halibut. I lived in Alaska for 25 years. My kids and families go to Homer for halibut charters every other year. We still have a good bit in the freezer so I tried your recipe. You have all the components just right. I use paprika liberally.

Great recipe. It was my first time baking halibut. I followed the recipe, but had to cook it a bit longer because it was 2″ thick. I took it out just before it was finished and it was cooked through by the time to eat. I shared with a friend who shared that it was “delicious”. It was light and flakey. Warmed left overs in the oven for about 20 minutes on very low heat. I will definitely make this again. Using the same recipe tonight for tilapia.

It was great recipe but I did alter the amount of butter1 Cup and about 4 to 5 tablespoons of garlic. And I cooked the lemon slices with the fish as well it turned out very good the family enjoyed it very moist flavorful

I don’t make halibut often but really like it. This recipe almost scared me off saying its great for holidays, birthdays…. I just wanted a good and quick meal. I tried it and it was melt in my mouth delicious. I did use a thick wild halibut, and followed the directions.
