Ingredients

  • 2 yellowfin tuna steaks, about 6 to 8 ounces each
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • sesame seeds, optional garnish
  • sliced green onions, optional garnish

Instructions

  • First, in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag, mix together the coconut aminos, honey, grated ginger, and minced garlic to create the marinade.
  • Place the yellowfin tuna steaks in the marinade, ensuring they are evenly coated. Marinate for 20 to 30 minutes. For a quicker option, even a 5 minute marinade adds flavor.
  • While the tuna is marinating, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium high heat.
  • Once the skillet is hot, remove the tuna steaks from the marinade, letting any excess drip off.
  • Place the yellowfin tuna steaks in the hot skillet. Sear for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until they develop a nice crust. The center should be pink and slightly rare for the best taste and texture.
  • While the tuna is searing, pour the leftover marinade into a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil for 1 to 2 minutes to create a glaze.
  • Once the tuna is seared, remove it from the skillet. Let it rest for 1 minute. Then, pour over the glaze and sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top!

Notes

  • Coconut aminos is the gluten free and soy free version of soy sauce.  Feel free to use gluten free soy sauce if desired.
  • If you are in a time crunch, quickly marinate the tuna steaks.  Even a quick 5 minute marinade is better than nothing!
  • Avoid overcooking.  The tune should be very juicy.
  • Keep a close eye on the tuna as it cooks.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the fish.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
